UP Manila StuDentista: How My University Life Has Been Going

My life as an isko-studentista so far has been a pressure cooker okay i guess. Carvings, drawings, reports, exams here and there. 4 exams again next week! And I'm supposed to study but i ended up here in front of my laptop blogging. I dunno, maybe i'm just too tired to even look at any study material right now or maybe this is just some sort of a temporary escape from the harsh reality that the pressure here really makes you crazy af.  I was culture shocked to be honest 'cause i've never ever imagined that i would experience this kind of pressure in school. You know what i mean, if before i really aim for a grade above 90, right now? just getting a 60 already calls for a celebration (yey you passed haha!) But thank God i haven't failed any exam YET (i'm not looking forward into receiving my first ever kwatro or sinko tho lol) *sigh* I remember how excited i was to go to school weeks before the start of classes after learning that i got accepted. Back then i was already imagining how wonderful my life's going to be in my dream school. Don't get me wrong, apart from the things that i just said, i love love love it here! Getting exposed to students who are pretty much like me, GC's (grade conscious) which adds to the already existing pressure. On top of that, the grading system which is zero based.. So the values of the exam grades are really uhm, motivating(?) he he he he huhuhuh :'(

(First exam results in Oral Anatomy. So depressing este motivating diba?)

Tho i start to feel like my enthusiasm is about to drain mL by mL as days pass. Learning crazy scary facts about the college's history of having students who stayed for like 9 ("magna"-nine years), 10 ("summa"-sampung taon) or even 12 years?! God! Really unbelievable, but true. (That student topped the boards tho) So that is what keeps me going. In UP, NOTHING is spoon fed. You'll really be pushed to the limit by the kind of professors you didn't even know existed. It's a humbling experience actually. But at the end of it all, it's going to be worth it. As what the college dean Dr. Medina always says, "You're among the top 5% in the whole Philippines. You're the cream of the crop." So we should all better get our asses moving to prove that. I still have lots of reading to do pa haha!
Thanks for taking the time to read. I'll post again when i can.

Don't forget to wear your smile. :D

ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY: AS DENTAL SPECIALTY

If you have been following my previous blog posts, you can really agree that I've come through a loooong way, working my ass off for me to get myself into where I am now.. Where exactly did I get myself into? In about 2 weeks I will be starting my D1 year of dental school!! OMG OMG OMG! Ok. So upon knowing that I got accepted, there's a 2-month extended vacation that comes with it (because almost all of the schools here in the Philippines start their classes in June) and I really didnt know what to do! I never considered studying in advance since NOTHING really prepares you for dental school, so might as well enjoy the break before stepping in to hell. So what I chose to do for the whole extended vacay was just watching Greys Anatomy, a medical drama series in a hospital setting, I'm pretty sure youre familiar with this.

The show has been airing since 2004 until now! (Perhaps the longest running TV show in history) they're already on their 12th season which is going to start this September with about twenty five, 43-minute-episodes each season. I'm currently on my 15th episode of season 8, and I'm afraid I wont be able to finish season 11 before school starts. Now this show never made me bored or something, every single episode just compelled me even more to consider being a surgeon myself someday. No, I take 'consider' back, it made me DREAM to be a SURGEON

I know its too early to say this, that I havent even started my first year dental school proper yet, but I came across this only specialty in dentistry that doesn't need me to go through medical school all over again before becoming a surgeon: Nope, not talking about orthodontics, neither perio or endo, but OMFS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery)

OMF Surgeon in a very GreysAnatomy-ish action

What is OMFS anyway?
(source: International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons website)

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the surgical specialty that includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatments of a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, defects and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, face, head and neck. It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty.

What is the scope of the specialty?
What do they exactly do?
[*with pictures (all credits to their respective owners)]

1 Preprosthetic surgery (bone augmentation)

Oral and dentoalveolar surgery
(removal of impacted and buried teeth, cysts, etc.)

Dental implant surgery and associated bone grafting

Orthognathic surgery
(dentofacial deformities)

5 Facial trauma surgery
(facial bone fractures and related soft tissue injuries)

6 Reconstructive surgery of the face

7 Cleft lip and palate surgery

8 Facial plastic surgery
(rhinoplasty, rhytidectomy, blepharoplasty, facial implants, etc.)

9 Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) treatment

10 Snoring and sleep apnea correction surgery

11 Oral Tumor/Cancer surgery

Pretty cool procedures right? But just like any other specialists, OMF surgeons frequently work alongside orthodontists, prosthodontists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, ENT surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and other medical professionals for optimum patient care.

Here in the Philippines, you will be needing 4 more years of residency after dental school (and of course not only passing, but doing very well in the national boards) before qualifying, and eventually becoming an OMF surgeon, which is longer than any other dental specialties. But with the scope of its practice? It sure is worth the time.

I do apologize for the lengthy post by the way. And I hope I made it as informative as possible 'cause I'm afraid I won't be able to write blog posts in the succeeding months. You know, getting in to the most prestigious dental school in the country also has its down sides: THE FREAKIN' PRESSURE IS ON! But I will still be posting updates about my dental student life in my social media accounts (links listed above)

So I guess this is it. Good luck to me!
Dr. Eric Raymund Q. Yu, DMD, FPCOMS (soon, soon, soon!)
I always have this habit of "claiming it" even though its very far from reality yet. But hey, nobody else will claim it for me other than myself! Hahah! Until next time.
And oh, don't forget to wear your smile. :D

U.P. MANILA DENTAL MEDICINE: JUST GOT ACCEPTED!

Days pass by so fast that it was already June 15 (a.k.a. the Judgement Day) the day which will determine my fate, if whether or not I will be accepted to UP. I wasn't able to sleep the whole night, and before I know it I already found myself googling ways on how to cope up with rejection lol. My stomach also felt so weird the whole morning and as much as I wanted to end the anxiety, I was just too scared to give them a call, scared by the possibility of getting rejected.

But at exactly 12 noon on that same day, I got myself a glass of fresh milk to calm my nerves down before I finally called the office of the college secretary to ask for the results.

The secretary told me only 3 out of the many transferees who applied for lateral entry to 3rd year DDM were accepted. "Well that escalated too quickly", said my very own heart that was already pumping rapidly. Then the secretary asked for my name to verify if I was on the list. And guess what?

I WAS ONE OF THOSE 3 WHO GOT ACCEPTED! OMG OMG OMG! I JUST COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! I got accepted to the school that was just a dream a few years back which seems to be very high for me to reach! Of course while I was still on the phone I remained calm even though deep inside I was already ready to scream my heart out. I believe I said thank you to her for like 5 times(?) as far as I can remember hahaha. And as she was discussing the requirements to comply for enrollment, it just felt so surreal. The fact that I will be continuing my dental education in UP still did not sink deep into my mind.

But i guess i'm gonna have to wait until that happens which i highly doubt. Yey!! 2 months extended vacation for me! I'm just so happy that i feel like i'm wearing the biggest smile right now.

Wear yours too! I'm sure it will look good on you.
And stay positive always, it works, trust me.
Until next time. :D

U.P. MANILA DENTAL MEDICINE: A WALKTHROUGH TO THE TRANSFER PROCESS

Well this has to be my very first post of the year. Guess I was so busy with my work in the call center while trying to balance it with my academics into finally finishing my 2-year Pre-dentistry course in Davao Medical School. And for the whole summer break I just reviewed for my comprehensive exams, as well as prepare for my much awaited transfer application to the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila Dentistry Proper to which this post will be all about.

UP has always been my dream school ever since I started to get serious with my studies. And I've already accepted the fact that it was already too late for me to regret that I wasnt able to take the UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT) when I was in high school. Back then I took my education for granted and as much as I want to go back in time and redo everything, that would be very impossible. But I didn't let that dictate my future tho. When I entered college I turned into a completely different person: A consistent dean's lister, student council officer, event organizer, I was in the cover of the school magazine, I joined my very first pageant and I volunteered in a lot of community extension services, you name it, I've experienced it all, I even experienced to be a working-student which was the toughest one ever.

I jumped from one experience to another but I definitely didnt expect to see UP along the road of my life. When a friend of mine sent me the guidelines for transferees for Dentistry Proper (shown below) my eyes just widened the moment I learned that I actually have a chance of getting in to my dream school!

The cutoff General Weighted Average for pre-dentistry graduates was 1.75 (that's equiv. to 89%) and I managed to keep my GWA above 1.75 so i qualified for transfer.

The transfer process was sort of different this year because it took three days (May 20-22) compared to other batches which just lasted for a day (yes, i asked previous transferees who were admitted before, that's how desperate i was lol) We had an orientation and an unexpected on-the-spot essay on the 1st day, dexterity examinations on the 2nd day, and the most dreaded panel interview on the last day. (Critera shown below)

During the orientation Dr. Lara discussed about the Return Service Agreement (RSA) policy of the college, should we be admitted and she also talked about the required pre-dentistry subjects especially the BIO102 (Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy) which wasn't found in the pre-dentistry curricula of other dental schools. If an admitted student hasn't taken BIO102 yet, then it would mean automatic 1 year delay, because he/she has to drop 1 major subject for it. and I was lucky enough to be the only one among the applicants who already took BIO102 (when i was in PT before shifting to dentistry) so if ever I'll be admitted, then there wouldn't be a problem. So make sure you take BIO102 if you have plans on applying, if it's not offered in your school you can still cross enroll if possible.

Anyway after the orientation we were tasked to answer three questions. all compressed & synthesized in a 1-paragraph-unexpected-on-the-spot essay.
And these questions were:
1. Why do you want to pursue your DDM here in UP?
2. What are your expectations?
3. And what can you contribute to the UP community?
I already prepared answers for these questions beforehand but I was expecting them to be asked during the interview. So basically I was left completely doomed hahaha!

In the afternoon, the UP College of Dentistry Student Council conducted the first ever PRIMER which helped us prepare for the Dexterity Exams the following day. And I really appreciate their effort to help us transferees. So if given the chance to be admitted, I'll definitely push this one for the next batches of aspiring transferees.

Then we had our Dexterity Exams on the 2nd day, and it was indeed very tiring because we took it from 8am to 4pm. The exam is divided into 2 sub tests: Drawing in the morning & Carving in the afternoon.

The Drawing part was further divided into 5 parts:
1. 2D to 3D drawing
2. 3D to 2D drawing
3. Mirror image drawing
4. Perceptual ability drawing (shadows)
The 5th one - Mirror Tracing Exercise (pic shown below) was inserted in the afternoon after they made your hands very tired from all of those drawings. It's a major part of the dexterity exam since it's within time pressure and it's one of the tests that will make or break your dexterity exam since you will be doing that for the rest of your life as a dentist.

(In this exercise youre only allowed to look at the mirror held by a UP professor. You need to get through a maze without lifting the pencil and touching the sides. Expect a more complicated maze than this tho. All of us were shocked during the actual mirror tracing)

For the carving part, all I can say is this:
(Some werent able to finish their carvings, mine almost broke while i was digging the hole at the middle but fortunately i was able to finish both carvings and they fit together perfectly)

Finally on the last day was Panel Interview day! When each of us will be grilled by at least 4 UP professors slash dentists who were members of the admissions committee for at least 30 minutes or so. Everyone was on their business casual attire, some wore ties, some wore high heels and even blazers, already getting nervous because we didn't know what questions are going to be thrown at us.

Just be prepared for the worst case scenario:
>they're a little bit harsh mainly because they want to know how you react to pressure and awkward situations (fortunately I managed to remain calm and confident all throughout the interview)
>they will ask you about current social issues (they asked my opinion about the BBL because I'm from Davao)
>why you chose dentistry, and the rest of the questions will be based on the ones that you wrote in your Work Experience, Extra Curricular activities, Talents and Interests section of the application form. (They asked me to draw on the white board that will symbolize dentistry as how I perceived it because I wrote "drawing" as one of my talents so good luck if you wrote there "singing" hahaha)
>show them that you really want to be here, as if your life depended on it!
>always, ALWAYS thank each of the interviewers paired with a firm, professional handshake. That will at least make them remember your touch, your skin, where do I begin? lol

And that's it. One more thing, the maximum number of students they admit to 1st Year Dentistry Proper is only 60 (which includes pre-dentistry students from UP) And there were more than a dozen of us aspiring transferees who competed for the much coveted slots of the most prestigious dental school in the country. So chances will depend on the number of slots available. Last school year only 1 transferee was admitted because the class size of the pre-dent students from UP was already 60+.

I did my very best to really stand out and I have no regrets whatsoever. I guess if it's meant to be it will be. I'll just keep you guys posted. For the meantime, while waiting for the results on June 15, I made this blog post for the benefit of those who also want to transfer next year. Great, now I'm finished writing this post. Now what? XD

CLAIM IT! UP FIGHT!

Amidst the anxiety and stress that anything brings to you. It helps most of the time when you always wear your smile :D
'Til next time.
